When my wife and I married, we received advice from a large number of people. It seems everyone is willing to impart “marital bliss” to the newlyweds. One of the suggestions I received was based on this quote:
A husband who would never dream of striking his wife physically can break, if not her bones, then certainly her heart by the brutality of thoughtless or unkind speech.
Jeffrey R. Holland
I think Mr. Holland truly highlights a profound, and prevalent truth.
There are two things I deplore more than anything. The first is child abuse, and the second is spousal abuse. I think these thoughtless acts occur because individuals cannot move past their own selfishness.
While I am certainly not the standard for a peaceful marriage, I strive regularly not to break the heart of the woman I chose to marry.
