Disgustingly stupid laws

The Nebraska legislature enacted a new law that just disgusts me. Perhaps you’ve heard about Nebraska’s Safe Haven Act that allows parents to abandon their children, of any age, without reprecussions or consequences.

Most states have similar laws that allow parents to abandon newborns, which I believe is permissible and will provide opportunities for these children to be raised in homes with loving parents, who can afford to provide for their children’s welfare. In contrast, Nebraska’s stupid law permits the abandonment of any child under the age of 18. There’s a new article discussing the latest children, both 16, to be abandoned in Nebraska.

Regardless of the welfare argument (you can always argue that the child’s welfare is better), think of the emotional and psychological impact this has on a child. This child is probably already neglected or troubled, and now you’re confirming any social stereotypes by telling the child that they’re unloved by their parents as well. Admittedly, many likely are, or have been, wards of the state, and subject to DHS or similar custody and control. This may be a "better" option than their present home life. However, no child deserves to be abandoned in a foreign state/city, and left with the state officials to provide their care and benefits.

Fortunately, the stupid Nebraska legislature will tackle the problem, and hopefully remedy this problem. Shame on the Nebraska legislature for even conceiving and interpreting this "remedy."
